Most initial lifeguard training is blended learning format, with a combination of online videos and in-person training (the in-person is usually over 3 days – most common is Friday evening (4 hours), all day Saturday (10 hours), and most of the day Sunday – usually 8 hours).

  • Tread water for two minutes without the use of your hands. Hands can be held up in the air or tucked under your armpits.
  • Brick test: You have 1 minute, 40 seconds to swim 20 yards (without goggles), surface dive and locate a brick submerged 7-10 feet deep in the pool then swim on your back with the brick back to your starting location, holding the brick throughout the swim. Both hands must hold the brick throughout the swim. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps

The individual must be 15 years old or older as of the first day of the training. Lifeguard certification is valid for two years and includes CPR certification. Lifeguards must be re-certified in CPR every year.
